A Special Season

I love Thanksgiving - always have and always will. It is my favorite holiday because it launches me into the festivities of Christmas, when my loved ones are most happy. Thanksgiving is like Christmas Eve to me, it is the cusp of many exciting memories to be made, traditions to keep and even new friendships to be found.

I was the middle of five children growing up. I still have excellent relationships with my parents and siblings. Our home was always open to all, and my Dad always exemplified a spirit of hospitality to those who may not have had a family to enjoy a meal with. His heart was to include everyone who seemed saddened around the holidays into our family. I believe my drive to be hospitable derives from him and my love for events stems from all the wonderful memories I have of celebrating life with those we loved.

Thanksgiving looks a bit different for me now. I have a husband and a child of my own to form memories with. Last year I was a new Mother. I slept in on Thanksgiving day. I cuddled my new baby while watching my Macey’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (a family tradition). Our friends started gathering in my home in the early afternoon and we all ate cream cheese stuffed celery, drank warmed spice wine and spun a turkey on the rotisserie out back. While making new memories, I challenge myself to include any and all who may need family to enjoy a meal with.

I invite you to celebrate my favorite Holiday with my family. If you need anything this year, I am here for you.

I understand that for many of us, these types of days feel forced. Maybe our immediate families are not ones we desire to dedicate special moments to. Honestly - maybe they do not deserve our love and devotion at all. Maybe holidays harbor terrible memories and traumatic experiences that need to be erased from the memory.

Take time for yourself this season. Start chipping away at the negative elements of the holidays and create new and peaceful ones. Choose to erase the pain and fill your mind with new, warm traditions. Practice self care! Rent the dishes so your day is not filled with dish soap!
